Course Description: This course is perfect for the dental hygienist exploring the role of the myofunctional therapist. Myofunctional therapists are in a unique position to treat the muscular dysfunctions that usually accompany temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). TMD can result from a variety of issues, from musculature imbalance to malocclusion and other traumatic events. Along with these commonly known factors, postural imbalances can also impact the temporomandibular joint. This course explores the causes of TMD, treatment options including traditional and newer techniques, and understanding a team approach to care. This course will include a demonstration of myofascial release, a discussion of therapy techniques, myofunctional and speech therapy, and inflammation reduction and analgesia treatment modalities.

Pat Brinkman-Falter, RDH, MS, COM, is board-certified in orofacial myology and owns Nebraska Myofunctional Specialties. She is a professional continuing education speaker on courses in airway, birth to six oral development, newborn airway development, recognizing myofunctional disorders, TMD pain management, and tethered oral tissues.
Pat is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, the International Association of Orofacial Myology, the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry, the Association of Applied Myofunctional Sciences, and the creator of the "SPOTS" myofunctional screening tool. She has held several leadership positions within the Nebraska Dental Hygienists' Association, including president and delegate. Pat has received numerous awards, including Young Dental's Hygienists Who Make a Difference in 2013, Nebraska Dental Hygienists' Association Dental Hygienist of the Year in 2013 and 2024, the ADHA Irene Newman Outstanding Clinician Award in 2015, and the IAOM Rosemarie Van Norman Prevention Award in 2020.
Her years of experience with tongue thrust, digit sucking, TMJD, and other areas of orofacial myofunctional disorders have been hugely successful. Pat has an innovative approach, allowing the patient to achieve overall confidence by providing an individualized, positive treatment plan. Pat has practiced orofacial myology since 2008 in Central and Eastern Nebraska. She and her husband have seven children and ten grandchildren.

Lancette VanGuilder, BS, RDH, PHEDH, CEAS, graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1995 and has spent the last two decades actively involved in the dental industry as a speaker, author, clinician, and public health advocate.
Lancette is the current vice president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association. She is a past president of the Nevada Dental Hygienists' Association, is a past recipient of the Nevada Dental Hygienist of the Year, and received the Innovative Career Vision Award for her work in all seven professional roles of the dental hygienist. In 2018, she received the ADHA Irene Newman Professional Achievement Award, recognizing her for her contributions to advancing the art and science of the dental hygiene profession over the last 15 years. She was selected as one of the Top 6 Dental Hygienists You Want to Know in 2021 by the national publication Dimensions in Dental Hygiene for being a mover and shaker in dentistry. In 2022, she received global recognition, receiving the Denobi "All-Star" award for her public health, mobile dentistry, advocacy, speaking, and vaccine accomplishments. Most recently, she received one of the highest honors given by the American Dental Hygienists' Association by being recognized with the 2022 ADHA Award of Excellence. This award has only been given to a small number of select individuals over the last 100 years.
Lancette has received advanced education in complete health dentistry, including sleep-related disordered breathing disorders and brain health. She received her certificate in
Alzheimer's prevention and reversal and ReCODE from Apollo Health, and her certificate in airway health from the Institute for Craniofacial Sleep Medicine.
Lancette is an internationally recognized continuing education speaker and serves as a key leader and mentor in the dental industry. She serves as the clinical director for Sierra Sleep, Airway, and Wellness Center in Reno, Nevada. In addition, Lancette works as a clinician in private practice, owns a mobile dentistry business, a national AGD PACE continuing education company, and provides ergonomic coaching. Amidst the pandemic, she became a proud COVID vaccinator with Battle Born Medical Corp and has traveled across the globe advocating for vaccine administration by dental hygienists. She co-founded The RISE Experience. RISE retreats provide education/training and support for women in health care who want to make an impact in the world and pursue entrepreneurship in dentistry.
Lancette is most proud of her work transforming health care to increase access to care and bridge the medical-dental divide.
