Course Description: For some patients, a history of trauma, anxiety disorders, or substance abuse can create a sense of real fear around a dental appointment. The relationship between the dental professional and patient is the key factor in what helps trauma survivors in recovery and building resilience to end the vicious cycle of dental fear. The fear of a dental appointment may leave the patient and clinician feeling exhausted and confused. Awareness of the neurobiological responses to trauma can help dental professionals provide optimum treatment with empathy and compassion. This course will discuss many non-dental related traumas that may cause the patient severe anxiety during a dental appointment. It will address treatment from a trauma-informed care mindset, guiding dental professionals to a deeper understanding of dental fear and management.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how previous trauma affects patients in the dental office;
  • Learn the neurobiological responses to trauma;
  • List the key factors in creating a safe space and empowering patients that are victims of trauma;
  • Discuss modes of patient communication and approaches that reduce retraumatization;
  • Learn the definition and key components of implementing trauma-informed care in the dental setting.

Course Description: As highly trained dental professionals, we screen and assess for many oral disorders and health problems for optimal patient care. The participant will get a look into myofunctional therapy, which is an individualized program designed to tone and coordinate the orofacial complex. Normalizing good oral development and function includes restoring the correct functional and rest patterns of musculature affecting occlusion, breathing, swallowing, speech, and TMD. SPOTS is the acronym and screening tool developed by the speaker to aid the clinician in easily identifying myofunctional disorders in the clinical setting. We will look at how Speech, Posture, Occlusion, Tethered oral tissues, and Swallow (SPOTS) affect our patients.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how Speech, Posture, Occlusion, Tethered oral tissues, and Swallow (SPOTS) can affect oral and facial development;
  • Identify the components of SPOTS and myofunctional disorders;
  • Use the SPOTS screening tool for clinical practice and patient education;
  • Identify how TMJ disorders can be affected by myofunctional influences;
  • Understand how the position of the tongue, and its functions, affect the orofacial structures, airway, and body posture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these CEs meet the requirements for my state?

  • Today's RDH is an ADA CERP and AGD PACE provider, both of which are recognized by all 50 states. According to CE provider accreditation guidelines, live, interactive, and streaming events are considered live CE as long as Q & A is offered at the end of each course. This event will be streamed live by Today's RDH, and the speakers will be available for Q & A after their presentation. All CE certificates issued will state this is a live event.

    Your state's Dental Practice Act, which can be found on your state's Board of Dentistry/Board of Dental Examiners website, includes your allowable duties, CE requirements, the rules pertaining to your state, etc. We highly encourage all dental health care professionals to check their state's Dental Practice Act often, as rules, regulations, and CE requirements can change.

    Disclaimer: Please note that the ethics/documentation course does not include state-specific dental practice acts/jurisprudence.

Are these CE courses considered "live" or "in-classroom?"

  • Yes, these courses are considered "live" and "in-classroom" and are recognized as such by AGD PACE and ADA CERP because the presenters are presenting live (not pre-recorded) and will be available to answer questions from participants during and after their course presentation (i.e., "interacting with the presenter"). The certificate of completion (CE certificate) will state it was a live course.

    Note for Tennessee: As of July 1, 2022, a live interactive webinar is considered in-person continuing education. This amendment to the statute defines a "live interactive webinar" as an internet-based broadcast in which viewers may interact with a presenter in real-time.

Are these CE courses truly live and not pre-recorded?

  • Yes, these CE courses are being presented live and in real-time. They are not pre-recorded. Being truly live is important because several state Dental Boards do not consider pre-recorded CE courses as meeting live CE requirements. If you are audited and used pre-recorded CE courses toward your live CE requirement, they may not qualify for re-licensure, and you may fall short of your required courses.

When will I receive an email with links to each course to log on?

  • Once you register for the event, you will receive an email from Eventbrite with your links for each course. Be sure to check your SPAM folder. In order to properly track attendance for the event, each attendee will have unique links to log in to each course: one link per course, for a total of four links. Do not share your links with anybody, or you will not receive your CE certificates of completion for attending. If you share your links and more than one person is logged on using your links, the tracking software that verifies how long you were in attendance for each course won't work correctly.

How do I get my CE certificate/proof of completion? Will it be emailed?

  • You will receive your CE certificate of completion via email within 7 days after the event concludes. It is very important that you use the same email address to log in to each individual course as you used to register for the event. If you use different emails, there is no way to verify your attendance with your registration. Please note you must be logged on to each course for at least one hour and 40 minutes per accreditation guidelines to receive CE credit.

    We recommend you create a SimpleCert account to access all of your CE certificates. Instructions on how to create an account will be in the emails that include your CE certificates (one email per CE certificate). If you do not receive your CE certificates or only receive some of them, CHECK YOUR SPAM BOX. Again, please give us 7 days to verify attendance before reaching out to support.

Are there test questions at the end of each course?

  • Unless your state requires a quiz/assessment to be taken at the completion of live CE courses, there will not be a quiz. For states requiring a quiz, each course's quizzes will be made available.

Is it mandatory to fill out the course evaluations to receive CE credit?

  • The course evaluations are not mandatory to fill out to receive CE credit. However, they are much appreciated because they give us valuable feedback to improve future events.

Will this be offered on any other days besides the day listed?

  • Because this is a live event (not pre-recorded), it can only be watched on the date and at the time listed. Please note your time zone because once each course starts, there is no rewind button to start the course from the beginning.

When is your next live virtual CE event going to be?

  • We plan each live, virtual CE event one at a time. We aren't organizing and planning our next event right now, so we don't know. However, if you'd like to be the first to know when we announce our next event, you can sign-up for our email list by going to todaysrdh.com and sign-up in the box that says, "Get Today's RDH Sent Directly to Your Inbox." We also offer on-demand (not "live") CE courses which can be found here: https://dentalce.todaysrdh.com/

Why is this event on a Friday?

  • Before we organize these live CE events, we've put out surveys. Based on the feedback from these surveys, we base which courses are offered and the day most people prefer. The majority stated they prefer a Friday or Saturday. Our last event was on a Saturday (March 25, 2023), so we are holding this event on a Friday (May 19, 2023). Though we try, we simply cannot please everyone.

Why aren't these CE courses free?

  • There are costs for putting on events like this; an IT team to ensure the event runs smoothly, speaker compensation, software costs, etc. To offer CE courses at no cost, we would need to have sponsors (i.e., manufacturers/companies pay for our expenses), and this event is completely non-sponsored. Though there is a cost to attend this event, it tends to be cheaper than attending an in-person dental conference, especially for those in rural communities who have added travel and hotel costs on top of in-person conference registration fees.

What is the latest to sign-up?

  • The latest to sign-up is 15 minutes before the last course of the day or when the event sells out.

Are there breaks?

  • Yes, there will be 15-minute breaks between each course.

What if I only want a couple of the courses being offered?

  • These courses are being sold as a package, not individually. If you prefer not to watch and receive CE credit for a particular course offered, you are free to step away during that time and return for other courses during the day.

Do I have to sit and watch the whole thing? Can I attend this CE event if I'm at work?

  • We highly suggest you watch and pay attention to each course just as you would if you were attending an in-person dental conference to take continuing education courses. We do not recommend attending this CE event if you are at work or distracted.

    Dentistry is an evidence-based health care profession which is why continuing education is required for re-licensure. Continuing education aims to keep dental professionals up-to-date on current patient care protocols, research, treatment modalities, techniques, and best practices. Its overreaching goal is to enhance clinical and overall skills to protect patients' health and safety and best meet the needs of patients. If you don't pay attention or are distracted, taking continuing education courses does not serve their intended purpose.

    If there are certain courses you don't want credit for, you can step away at those times. There will be breaks in between the courses. Please remember you must be logged in to each two-hour course for a minimum of one hour and 40 minutes per accreditation guidelines to receive CE credit. The webinar software tracks your time in the event, and there will be no exceptions made to those who do not attend for the minimum amount of time.

Are there refunds?

  • Full refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) will be available through May 12, 2023. Starting May 13, 2023, no refunds will be offered. Please make sure you are available to attend before purchasing and that you have a strong internet connection.

Can we sign-up as a group, or does everyone need to sign-up separately?

  • Everyone who wants to receive CE credit must register and log into each course individually. This is because CE certificates are awarded based on comparing who purchased tickets and how long that person attended each course.

    CE credit will not be given to the entire group if a group is viewing on the same device. CE credit will only be given to the person who is logged in to the device.

Are these courses only for hygienists, or can doctors and dental assistants receive CE too?

  • These courses can be taken by doctors, hygienists, and dental assistants for CE credit.

Can Canadians receive CE credit for these courses?

  • Generally speaking, Canada recognizes CE Courses offered by AGD PACE-approved providers. However, we cannot guarantee acceptance, so we always recommend checking with your governing agency to confirm approval.

Is there a cap on the number of attendees?

  • There is a cap of 5,000 attendees.

What is the processing fee?

  • The processing fee is an Eventbrite fee they charge for using their software.

Do I have to watch this on a laptop?

  • You can watch from any device with an internet connection or data, including laptops, desktops, tablets, or smartphones.

What happens if I get disconnected?

  • Click on the course link again and log back in using the same name and email you registered with. If you get disconnected again, try using a different device, like a smartphone, but please make sure you are using the same name and email you registered with.

Are these CEs reported to CE Broker?

  • Not directly. Just like an in-person conference, the certificate needs to be manually submitted to CE Broker. To do this, you will need to upload the CE certificate of completion to your CE Broker account.

Can the course presenters hear or see me?

  • No, the speakers can't see or hear you. You interact with them through a live chat.

Will closed captioning be available during this event?

  • Yes, we will have closed captioning available during the event. Attendees can choose to turn it on or off.
